Pune ranked most liveable city in India, Delhi 65th

Pune is the most liveable city, followed closely by Navi Mumbai and Greater Mumbai in a ranking of 111 Indian cities with the national capital ranked at a lowly 65 on the Ease of Living Index released by the government here.

Thane is the fourth Maharashtra city that made it to the top 10 in the list. Other cities ranked among the best 10 are Tirupati, Chandigarh, Raipur, Indore, Vijaywada and Bhopal.
Notably, none of the cities in big states like Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have made it to the top 10.
Chennai has been ranked 14, Hyderabad at 27 and Bengaluru at 85. Kolkata had refused to participate in the survey.
Gurugram is at the 88th spot. Rampur in Uttar Pradesh is at the bottom of the list that has Jammu and Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir at 95 and 100.
The Ease of Living Index was launched by Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday.
The survey based on four parameters — governance, social institutions, economic and physical infrastructure — was conducted in 111 cities across the country.
It is an initiative of the ministry to help cities assess their liveability on the bases of global and national benchmarks.
The survey was started to encourage cities to move towards an outcome-based approach to urban planning and management.
Its framework comprised four pillars — institutional, social, economic and physical which are further broken down into 15 categories and 78 indicators.
The minister said evaluation of cities was done on a 100-point scale with the institutional and social pillars carrying 25 points each, five points for the pillar on economic and 45 points for the physical pillar.
A ministry official said the cities submitted data on more than 50,000 points. Secondary audit of 10,000 documents, physical audit of 14,000 units and survey of more than 60,000 citizens were completed which led to finalization of the index.
The assessment standards, according to the government, are closely linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and will provide a strong impetus to India’s effort for systematic tracking progress of the goals in the urban areas. Of the 17 SDG goals, eight are directly linked to India’s ease of living assessment framework.

Cleanest Cities in the Country- 2017 list released

‘Cleanest Cities in the Country’

Survey of ‘Swachh Survekshan-2017’ — carried out by the Quality Council of India released

Indore and Bhopal, in Madhya Pradesh have emerged as the cleanest cities.

Indore and Bhopal, both in Madhya Pradesh, have emerged as the cleanest cities in the country as per a massive cleanliness survey commissioned by the Union Urban Development Ministry. They are followed by Visakhapatnam, Surat, Mysuru, Tiruchi, New Delhi Municipal Council area, Navi Mumbai, Tirupati and Vadodara in the top 10 list.

The survey — Swachh Survekshan 2017 — was carried out by the Quality Council of India across 434 cities in the country and is based on the feedback of 18 lakh respondents.Cleanest Cities

The results of the survey were announced by Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday.

The top 10 cleanest cities in the country are Indore, Bhopal, Visakhapatnam, Surat, Mysuru, Tiruchi, New Delhi Municipal Council area, Navi Mumbai, Tirupati and Vadodara, respectively.

In Madhya Pradesh, all cities and towns have substantially improved sanitation rankings in 2017 over that of 2016 and 2014. The State’s 23 cities and towns are among the top 100 cleanest cities in the country.

Gujarat is also close, with 21 of its cities and towns in the top 100 list. Surat and Vadodara are in the fourth and tenth position respectively.

However, Gujarat has the maximum of 12 cities among the Top 50, closely followed by Madhya Pradesh with 11 and Andhra Pradesh with 8. Tamil Nadu and Telangana account for four each. Chandigarh, Chattisgarh, Delhi, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Sikkim and Uttar Pradesh account for one each in this group.

“I would prefer to call these results as ‘Citizens’ Verdict’ on sanitation in urban areas, given the scale and eagerness of citizens’ participation and the fact that these 434 cities and towns account for about 60% of the country’s urban population,” Mr. Naidu said.

“I am particularly happy over the fact that over 80% of the respondents reported a definite improvement in cleanliness in our cities and towns over the last year and in sanitation related infrastructure and services like waste collection and processing has improved,” he said.

A major transformation in respect of sanitation was taking place in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand and Chattisgarh, followed by Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. “So, let us call them the ‘Movers and Shakers’ of the ongoing cleanliness drive,” he said.

Rajasthan and Punjab have five cities each in the Bottom 50, followed by Maharashtra, with two and one each from Haryana, Karnataka and Lakshadweep. Of the 62 surveyed in Uttar Pradesh, 41 figured among the Bottom 100 and this was a matter of concern, Mr. Naidu said.

“Further to our analysis of the survey data, sanitation scenario in Bihar, Rajasthan, Punjab and Kerala also appear to be a matter of concern, requiring these States to step up efforts,” he said.

In respect of Bihar, out of the 27 cities surveyed this year, 19 of them were ranked beyond 300 and the best rank for the State being 147 for Biharsharif. Fifteen cities are among the Bottom 100.

In the case of Rajasthan, 18 of the 29 cities are ranked beyond 300, with 13 among the Bottom 100. Best rank that the State could get is 171 for Bundi.

In Punjab, 7 of the 16 cities surveyed figure among the Bottom 100 with the best rank being 121 for SAS Nagar.

India will be among top 3 countries in S&T by 2030: Modi

India will be among top 3 countries in S&T by 2030: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a gathering at the Indian Science Congress in Tirupati on Tuesday said India will be among top 3 countries in S&T by 2030.

The brightest and best in every corner of India should have the opportunity to excel in science. We need to connect our leading institutions to all stakeholders, including schools and colleges.  Seeding the power of ideas and innovation in schoolchildren will broaden the base of our innovation pyramid and secure the future of our nation.

The Government remains committed to provide the best support to our scientists and scientific institutions. Niti Aayog is also evolving a holistic science and technology vision for the country. Technology Vison 2035, released in last year’s Science Congress, is now being developed into a detailed roadmap for 12 key technological sectors.

Waters that surround Indian peninsula and the vast coastline, provides 2.4 million sq km of exclusive economic zone. Ocean economy would be a significant dimension in our sustainable future. Ministry of Earth Sciences is working on launching a ‘Deep Ocean Mission’ to explore, understand and harvest these resources in a responsible way.

Our best science and technology institutions should further strengthen their basic research in line with leading global standards. Translating this basic knowledge into innovations, start-ups and industry will help us achieve inclusive and sustainable growth. By 2030 India will be among top 3 countries in science and technology. Science must meet the rising aspirations of our people. Another empowering factor for scientific delivery is the Ease of Doing Science. If we want science to deliver, we must not constrain it.

One major area that needs to be addressed is the Cyber Physical Systems, as it has the potential to pose unprecedented challenges. It is a huge opportunity for training and research in Robotics, Digital Manufacturing, AI, Big Data Analysis, Quantum Communication, Deep Learning and Internet of Things. Tomorrow’s experts will come from investments we make today in our people and infrastructure. The nation will always be grateful to scientists who have worked tirelessly to empower our society by their vision, labour, and leadership.  Our scientists have contributed strongly to the strategic vision of the nation.

There is a need to develop and exploit these technologies in services and manufacturing sectors. Ranging from fundamental science to applied science with emphasis on innovations, the government is committed to supporting different streams of scientific knowledge. We need to keep an eye on the rise of disruptive technologies and be prepared to leverage them for growth.
